There is growing interest throughout the chemicals industry to develop and use ionic liquids in a wide range of end applications. Although ionic liquids are not new, there is a ground swell of interest that is bringing them out of academia and closer to commercialisation.

Ionic liquids are unusual salt based fluids, that unlike most are liquid at room temperature. This provides numerous opportunities through commercial applications. Their novel functionalities include being very stable, highly conductive and easily recyclable after use. Their applications are as diverse as electro chemical products like batteries where their stability and high conductivity are driving interest and as an alternative to solvents where their natural make up and lack of VOC's or HAP's save users considerable time and money in regulations and handling challenges.
