Official Information:
The International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment (ICHMET) is a unique event in the environmental science congress calendar. It does not focus on either a specific metal, or on a specific environmental compartment or medium, but is aimed to provide a unique platform for discussing and presenting state-of-the-art research activities to a broad international scientific community.
ICHMET does not concentrate on solely on sources, or transport or remediation, instead it provides a multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary forum where an individual's or group's expertise can become part of a broader context.
A major focal point of the forthcoming 16th ICHMET will be the application of multidisciplinary approach to the development and validation of new and current environmental policies for the reduction of the impact of heavy metal contamination on the environment and human health. Defining policy requires input from many specialised branches of environmental science and environmental technology. We believe the format of the ICHMET series of conferences provides the ideal framework for a number of more environmental policy oriented contributions, and of course contributors, and we will be encouraging both national and international environmental organisations to be both present and to actively participate.
Policy requires sound and relevant science if it is to be feasible and efficacious. ICHMET 16 will therefore continue the tradition of inviting renowned international experts from a range of fields to give plenary lectures which will offer an up to date overview of the state of the art in their respective fields. However mostly ICHMET 16 will be a show case for the relevant, sound and cutting edge research carried out by YOU. ICHMET 16 will include sessions on heavy metals in environmental media, advances in analytical techniques, and in remediation technologies, but will also include a specific session on heavy metals in the atmosphere focussing on global scale observation and modelling systems with regard to transport, chemistry and deposition, where abstracts looking at how these may change in a changing climate will be particularly welcome.
A session on advanced data management to support the Group on Earth Observation has also been included. The GEO initiative in support of GEOSS objectives which aims to provide decision-support tools ties in with the last novel session included in ICHMET 16 which will be on international legislation development on heavy metals including the activities carried out in the framework of several international programs (i.e., UNEP, UNECE-EMEP, FWD). A number of Special Issues of international peer-reviewed journals are planned in addition to the Conference Proceedings, and participants are encouraged to bear this in mind as they prepare their Abstracts.
It was our pleasure to give a brief presentation of Rome during the closing session of the hugely successful (and enjoyable) ICHMET 15, but really Rome needs no introduction, we look forward to seeing you there in September 2012.
