The 2021 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, December 16-21, 2021. Pacifichem 2021 will be the eighth in the series of successful cosponsored scientific conferences of Pacific Basin Chemical Societies. Founded in 1984, these conferences have been held in Honolulu, Hawaii about every five years.
I. Core Chemistry
Symposia in all areas of Analytical Chemistry are encouraged, including new developments in instrumentation, theory, methodology and applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: chromatography, electrophoresis and related separation sciences, mass spectrometry, ion mobility spectroscopy and related techniques methods of analysis, fluorescence, IR, UV-Vis, Raman, and other spectroscopy techniques, sensors, immunoassays and other related technologies, electrochemistry, microfluidics and lab on a chip, structure elucidation via NMR, surface analysis and X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, novel microscopy, techniques for material characterization, sample preparation or autonomous environmental monitoring.
Symposia in all areas of inorganic chemistry, including bioinorganic chemistry, catalysis, organometallics, coordination chemistry, and solid-state chemistry; example topics include synthesis, electron transfer reactions, magnetism, bonding properties, mechanisms, molecular structures, reactivity, spectroscopy, theory, kinetics, and thermodynamics.
Symposia in all areas of organic and bioorganic chemistry as applied, for example, to synthesis, natural product chemistry, metal-, organo- or photo-catalytic reactions, molecular recognition, self-assembly, asymmetric systems, heterocyclic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, pharmaceutical process chemistry, high-throughput chemistry, flow systems, amino acid/peptide chemistry, and biomimetic chemistry.
Symposia in all areas of the physical chemistry as applied, for example, to chemometrics, dynamical systems, excited states, imaging, modeling, molecular assemblies/processes/electronics, quantum/statistical mechanics, surfaces/interfaces, and visualizations.
Computational & Theoretical
Computational and simulation science is growing rapidly in capability and impact and has now become the third paradigm of science after theory and experiment. We welcome and encourage symposia in all areas of theoretical and computational chemistry. Indicative topics include but are not restricted to theoretical and computational aspects of dynamical systems, excited states, imaging and visualization, molecular modelling and simulations, molecular assemblies and processes, quantum and statistical mechanics, and agent-based modelling.
Symposia in all areas of organic, inorganic, and naturally occurring polymeric systems as applied, for example, to polymer structures, characterizations, modifications, polymerization kinetics, polymerization mechanisms, novel polymerizations, physicochemical properties, simulation/theoretical developments, structure analysis, functional properties, and solution/surface/solid state properties of macromolecules.
Symposia in which chemical solutions to biological questions in addition to those in which biological systems are employed to solve chemical challenges are the focus of the Biological topic area. This includes, for example, the fields of medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, molecular mechanisms of biological molecules or systems, synthetic biology, chemical biology, and systems biology.
Symposia in all areas of the chemistry of materials from fundamentals to applied to, for example, characterizations, chemical devices and switches, clusters, directed and self-assembly, emergent technologies, plasmonics, fabrication of materials with novel and/or useful optical, electronic, magnetic, catalytic, and mechanical devices; role of surfaces and interfaces; microarray technologies, synthesis, and theory.
II. Chemistry for Global Challenges
This topical area focuses nanoscience and nanotechnology research at the interfaces of chemistry, biology, materials science, physics, and engineering. Examples of topics in this symposium include synthesis, assembly, characterization, theory, and simulation of nanostructures (nanomaterials and assemblies, nanodevices, and self-assembled structures), nanobiotechnology, nanofabrication, methods and tools for nanoscience and nanotechnology, and self- and directed-assembly.
Chemical, Biological, and Biomedical Engineering
Lying at the combined interface of chemistry to biology, bioengineering, synthetic biology, and medicine seeks to both solve real-life problems and fuel discovery across the scientific enterprise. Symposia in the area will focus on repurposing molecular machines for new chemistry, designing and writing genomes, developing enabling technologies, computational and evolutionary design approaches, and cell-free biology. Topics chosen will be of special interest to researchers in medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, molecular mechanisms of biological molecules or systems, synthetic biology, chemical biology, and systems biology.
Chemistry for Sustainability
Symposia in all areas of agricultural chemistry, green chemistry, environmental chemistry, clean technology and geochemistry are welcome. These areas may include: the development of new disruptive technologies for improved sustainability in chemical/materials manufacturing; approaches toward biodegradable materials; improved synthetic protocols for reduced waste generation, toxic by-product formation and energy consumption; chemistry for and from agriculture and food; environmental chemistry of atmospheric processes; mineral-water interface; geomicrobial processes; contaminant transport and mitigation (eg. carbon sequestration, radionuclides and heavy metals); process modification for pollution prevention and environmental remediation; applications in public health sciences.
Chemistry of Energy
This topical area focuses new scientific advances in all aspects of energy research related to capture, conversion and storage of energy, and alternative energy. Examples of topics in this symposium include 1) energy materials, 2) light harvesting assemblies, energy 3) conversion processes, 4) solar fuels such as hydrogen production & CO2 reduction,5) inorganic, organic and hybrid photovoltaics, 6) photosynthesis and biofuels, 7) fuel cells, 8) storage batteries and supercapacitors.
Chemistry of Health Care
Chemistry lies at the epicenter of discovery in modern medicine. Chemists devise or engineer new, efficient pathways to synthesize or biosynthesize new molecular chemotypes and develop tools to evaluate their mechanism of action in collaboration with experts in human biology. These studies result in new paradigms, new technologies, and new therapeutics for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Symposia in the area will focus on chemical approaches to next-generation therapeutics, novel delivery methods, understanding and characterizing the microbiome, new genome-editing approaches to fight disease, and host-pathogen interactions.
Chemistry Education and Communication
We welcome symposia in all areas of chemical education research and practice, and chemistry communication and outreach, including but not limited to:
online and digital learning media
evaluation of teaching strategies including blended learning, active learning, and process oriented learning strategies
assessment strategies and curriculum development
educational academia/industry partnerships

Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Beyond
Automated synthesis and experimentation, artificial intelligence/deep learning methods, in silico evolution of molecules and materials, and Big Data are likely disruptive technologies in chemistry in the near future. This symposium will discuss all aspects of artificial intelligence, machine learning, large data sets, informatics, ontologies, mark up languages, automated synthesis, evolutionary algorithms, pattern recognition etc. Indicative topics include chemometrics, informatics, neural networks, support vector machines, decision trees, quantitative structure-activity and structure-property relationships modelling, Internet of things, chemical automation and robotics, chemical evolution and evolutionary algorithms. All topics in this broad and exciting area are welcome and encouraged.
